I want to delete some of my folders and I don’t seem to have “Manage Folders” in my account. I hope you can help me. Thank you.

Microsoft has changed the GUI of the Hotmail email service. They’ve tried to make it more intuitive and less cramped. Thus, many features that were immediately accessible in the previous version are now hidden behind mouse-over or mouse-click actions. A case in point is “Manage folders” which was placed below the list of folders in the left pane at your Hotmail account.

Manage folders feature has NOT been removed from Hotmail. Simply take the cursor over “Folders” and a small ‘gear’ icon will appear to the right. Click on it to get a pop-up menu which has “Manage folders“.

Through “Manage Folders” section you can create new folders and rename or delete the ones you have. You are also shown the number of messages stored and the disk space occupied by each folder. FYI, Hotmail now allows you to make subfolders.

Note: Manage folders feature provides a quick way to get rid of a folder. However, be very careful in using the “Delete” folder function of Hotmail. If a folder is removed, all its messages will be deleted. Hotmail thankfully displays a warning message in a small pop-up, all messages in the selected folder will be removed when you try to delete a folder.

But if you’ve accidentally got rid of a folder, don’t despair. Quickly open the “Deleted” items folder, select the messages and move the messages to another folder in Hotmail. Unfortunately, if you’ve also emptied the Deleted items folder, there is little you can do to retrieve the emails. You can try your luck with the Hotmail support staff by posting your problem on the Windows Live Help web site.
