Scanning and JPGs

Scanners are used to digitize photographs or images from print media such as magazines, newspapers etc. If the purpose is to put these images on the web, they should be, in most cases, converted to JPG format. Let me tell you two important points about scanning and saving the images as JPEGs.

• Always scan at a higher resolution. Start at something like 300 or 600 dpi and later decrease it to 72 dpi. Your images will come out well.
• When scanning black and white photos, reduce them to greyscale before saving.

I use a UMAX scanner which comes with its own software (VistaScan) that I operate through Adobe PhotoShop. The image editing tool allows me to manipulate the images (their resolution, size, brightness and contrast and other features) easily.
